Happy New Year!

We have had a great start to the new year.  We started a new reading unit, writing unit, and our first PBL science unit.  We continue to work hard in math and will be finishing up another math unit around number sense.

Reading
We have started our new study of nonfiction.  We started our study by focusing on the differences between fiction and nonfiction.  We will move into the features of nonfiction (photographs, diagrams, captions, mat) and how they help us understand the information in the text.

Science
We started our first PBL (Project Based Learning) of the year.  A PBL is an integrated unit that requires planning, inquiry, collaboration, and communication.  The children have been doing a great job learning about the concepts of sound.  We were able to see Ms. Poland and two fifth graders play their instruments and how they produce sound.  We listened  and wrote down the different sounds we heard in the classroom.  Then we went for a walk and sat and listened to sounds we heard in different parts of the school.  Finally, we explored with different materials to see if they make sound, how they make sound, and what they sounded like.
